Risengrød is a Danish traditional Christmas dish, that despite the sweet cinnamon-sugar topping, is usually eaten for dinner. It is made out of rice, water, salt, and whole milk and is topped with butter and sprinkled with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
The history of the snowballs, goes back to the 2nd World War where the housewives didn’t have a great food supply and therefore developed a treat, that was made with few ingredients and contained a lot of energy. Basic commodities like butter and oatmeal were still available in the stores, so the snowballs were invented.
Æbleskiver is served with powdered sugar and berry jam and we often drink Glogg (Gløgg) on the same occasion. The name “Æbleskiver” means “Apple Slices” but nowadays it is made without apples, although I prefer to fill the Æbleskiver with an apple filling so that the recipe lives more up to its name.
